is a meditation on life, love, loss, and incredible perseverance. In
this, Ginny Gaskill’s first poetry collection, she chronicles a journey
of devastating loss that ultimately leads not only to a deeper faith in
herself and in life, but increased wellbeing and sense of belonging in a
community of artists. Ginny recounts her experience as a “rebuilding
of soul,” a need and a quest that should interest any reader truly
engaged in the sorrows and joys of a life well lived. It is through
speaking her truth that Ginny Gaskill has survived—and thrived. She
invites us to begin, and begin again, as we enter into that shared
experience where life takes on new meaning through opening to all that
love holds.

Art is breath.

My lungs take baby steps,
tiny breaths of fear.
It feels right, good.
Air in
words out.
Deeper breaths
fear replaced by joy.

Oxygen to my mind

thoughts quicken
The lace that I draw
words today
tangles tomorrow
the line that turns
to a leaf, a flower.

The Women

The women live

up and down
the street.
Each has a box
with a door.

They sell themselves.
They buy a chance.
They –
bargain
steal
hope
pray
for the best.

They want –

pretty
soft
safe.

Sometimes they win.
More often –
slapped down
bit
chewed up
spat out
by those
designed to protect.

The women

continue to give.
Each generation,
each culture,

knead their bread.
Finds the food
to fill their bellies.

They take to their

beds. Want passion
and softness.
Some win,
get to sleep in
his arms, safe
through the night.

Some not so lucky.

Wam Bam
Thank You Ma'am.
Or worse –
hit
bit
torn apart.

Lie in confusion,

in despair.

They gave it all.
Tried to hold
on to their souls.
But some gambled,
lost that too.

Why Do Poets Write

Why do poets write?

The obvious, trite answer
because we have to.
But why?

I write because

I have no choice.
I need to tell my truth.

The words tremble

in my body
on my tongue.
My mind sometimes
frightened, terrified.

Banks of fog.

I pull phosphorus
letters from the sea.
I gather them
begin to build the words.
To tell my tale, my truth.

When I am afraid.

It makes me –
face
confront
fight.

I pick I choose

till it is right
and then I sleep.

But still it is not done.

I say my poetry
gives me voice.
It does.

It requires that I speak

say it out loud. The words
spring to my lips.
Get caught in my tongue.

Sometimes tastes of bile,

other times so sweet, so light.

They can be sticky

grasping to my body
not wanting to leave
the safety of my lips.

Each time a word is

spoken, a sinew rips
and it is strengthened.

I am so tired.

I fall asleep.
I can rest.

I wake, I tremble

I write again
because I have to.

I Wander

I wander

what do I see.
A bee, feeding
on the lace of flowers.
An old tree
sharing food and shelter.

I see swallows

soaring through the morning
and evening skies.
Two stay behind
begin their beginning.
The sea kisses the shore
never tires of her.
The osprey, the wind
meet and dance.

The clouds

stroke the mountains.
I see the sun
and it watches me
as I wander.
Some of my fabric beads.
I have been talking myself into this for quite some time and now I have committed. There sure are a lot of pieces to go through and to think about to start this up.
I still have to figure out how to make a link to it but I should be able to figure it out soon. Computers are my friends.
Computers are my friends.
Computers are my friends.
Computers are my friends.
I'm working on my mantra.Ginny Gaskillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04426661467577661048noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926770543325188785.post-33902691591327532532010-09-23T16:27:00.004-06:002010-09-23T16:36:02.613-06:00I don't sit still wellI hate sitting in meetings but doodling really helps. I really had to work to get caught up on what everyone else is doing. I have been working these last months but I just have not been on my computer.

Last February I took a class with DJ Petitt out in California. It was so much fun and I learned so much. My favorite part was learning to overpaint on a photo. It was a great way to take a photo that wasn't right or couldn't be taken the way one wanted it.

I think the horse looks almost magical.

Getting rid of the background and correcting the skin and hair makes it much better and more interesting.

Ginny Gaskillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04426661467577661048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926770543325188785.post-55064033826148938962010-03-08T22:07:00.007-07:002010-03-08T22:43:47.583-07:00Great times have been hadI have been so busy these last few months. I have learned so much in both Photoshop and in my mixed media ventures.

I have been participating in a live feed class on Photoshop with a group called CreativeTech. They have some wonderful classes that are free for the watching. If someone wants to watch them at their own convenience, and receive some files that help expand the knowledge, one can buy the programs at a pretty reasonable rate. I am 2 weeks from completing a 6 month course. Give them a look at creativetech.com.

During January I took an online class from DJ Pettitt. It was called Memories and Manipulations. This was a course on Photoshop but from an artistic angle. I learned how to create brushes and to use the opacity and filters and joining layers, and so much more. I still have to go back and finish up.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaMaDwyKMlquv0nl5HlqPcPGPLj6ZxZDANXhLmig-xEOOZaTA8E-oYkr26CoGd_akdfE3xrAi_9G91hYIKgIYXls0ZAnsZc7XZVUyVM4GxhlJSipxXNRwlO8NTuH6pM6hkOg_JGHrtyWs/s320/MASK1COPY1abcd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446503824526347522" />
This is one of the exercises that we did in class.

I also attended a retreat in Los Gatos. I will report on that in the next post.Ginny Gaskillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04426661467577661048noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926770543325188785.post-40474556211329172482010-01-01T17:12:00.007-07:002010-01-01T18:11:12.330-07:00SynergyA brand new year. A brand new time. I am feeling uplifted and hopeful for the future.

I was sitting, watching the Rose Parade, looking at the latest postings on blogs that I feel inspired by when one kind of hit me between the eyes. It was from Nina Bagley of the blog Ornamental. She was talking about the forest and individual trees. I will let you read her to get her meaning but it gave me some symbolism that I needed.

I keep getting stuck in my art. I love mixed media or at least the concept because I love doing many types of art. I have all these pieces of things done (think tree) but I have not been able to compile them into some wonderful things (think forest). I don't want to just tack them together I need them to be coherent.

So here comes my word for 2010.
"SYNERGY"
That is where the total is greater than the sum of the parts. This is what I am hoping for this year.

I do not do resolutions anymore. It makes me angry at myself when I do not succeed, however I am continuing to work on my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. I need to go back and review it again to stay on track.

On a really fun note my DH gave me an online class with DJ Petitt. It is on using Photoshop with an artistic flair. I am so excited. I love DJ's work and I have so many photos that I want to work with. People can sign up until Jan 4.

I also am starting an additional blog to post photographs. I am going to take at least a photo a day this next year (thank you Jane Dunnewold). I will post them each week. I am hoping some of my friend at Mixed Media Mavens will join me. We will see if they decide to play.

Happy New Year everyone!!!Ginny Gaskillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04426661467577661048noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3926770543325188785.post-51416521704281633692009-12-29T20:26:00.006-07:002009-12-30T16:51:40.597-07:00Thank you Kathy<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 302px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigCqtaxb1PQrJSxxswyJJ0ZtO1W7hmiVbSaLeU69QeWWJpGpEVtxt9DBKdz94LAeAqiu3BNeMhqOW_Z3pkBHUHvZRdzaqFsY37jveJcwz5NliXKDW85sZjwfzOjtHRIpc2v830PGa1hPE/s320/DSC06741.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420867930558879266" />

A while ago I won a drawing given by the talented Kathy Botsford. Just before Christmas I received my package and I just have to share a picture of the wonderful loot that I received. A beautiful necklace. I love the medallion and the clasp is to die for. The note cards are also wonderful so full of depth.
